In the ðeriod from June 2 to June 29, 2008, Russian distributors released 23 films to CIS screens, six of which were in limited release of no more than 30 screens. Total box office for the period was $62.3 million, which is 2.2% less than in May 2008 ($63.7 million) and 13.1% more than in June 2007 ($55.1 million). In June of this year, CIS citizens bought 9,161,756 admissions, which is 15.2% less than in June 2007 (10,803,922 admissions). Total CIS box officer as of June 29, 2008 was $444.7 million, which is 34% more than it was as of July 1, 2007 ($331.7 million). The top ten companies in June were: 1. UPI – $39.85 million, 2. Caro Premier/Caroprokat – $8.03 million, 3. 20th Century Fox CIS – $4.63 million, 4. BVSPR – $3.38 million, 5. Paradise – $2.24 million, 6. Central Partnership/CP Classic – $1.82 million, 7. Top Film – $0.67 million, 8. Pyramida – $0.53 million, 9. West – $0.41 million, 10. Nashe Kino – $0.34 million. In June, the list of films that made more than $1 million gained nine more titles, for a total of 86. As of July 1 last year, there we 63 such films. The top ten highest-grossing films were: Kung Fu Panda (UPI) – $20.07 million, Wanted (UPI) – $10.70 million, Sex in the City (Caro Premier) – $6.93 million, The Incredible Hulk (UPI) – $6.18 million, The Happening (20th Century Fox CIS) – $3.95 million, Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull (UPI) – $2.86 million (total gross – $16.91 million), You Don’t Mess With the Zohan (BVSPR) – $2.38 million, My Mom’s New Boyfriend (Paradise) – $2.03 million, Big Stan (Central Partnership) – $1.80 million, The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian (BVSPR) – $0.96 million (total gross – $14.73 million). The leader in limited release in June was Roy Andersson’s comedy You, the Living (Cinema Without Frontiers), which grossed $35,449 from four screens (total gross – $49 958). The main events in June were a magnificent start for Timur Bekmambetov’s Wanted (UPI), which set a record for widest release for a non-Russian film (859 screens) and a first-weekend box office record for 2008 ($10,695,740), and the achievement of 20th Century Fox CIS, which was able to gross more than $100 million ($101.76 million) for the second time in its history. The first time was in 2006, when 20th Century Fox CIS/Gemini (as it was known back then) grossed a total of $106.09 million for the year. |
