The romantic comedy Sex and the City (Caro Premier), the theatrical film version of the ðoðular American cable TV series that ran from 1998–2004, had a successful start in CIS cinemas. Starring the inimitable Sarah Jessica Parker, Kim Cattrall, Kristin Davis and Cynthia Nixon and directed by Michael Patrick King, the film grossed $3,798,757 from 495 screens in four days and easily topped the CIS box office chart. Sex’s average earnings per screen were sexy too – $7674. The leader of the last two weeks, Kung Fu Panda (UPI), caved into the pressure and went down a notch to second place, having earned $1,396,778 from 615 screens in its third weekend (70% less than its second) for an 18-day total of $18,919,553. Accordingly, Kung Fu Panda is also second in the list of the highest grossing animated films ever distributed in the CIS, second only to Shrek the Third (UPI), which grossed $23.39 million in 2007. In third place was Dennis Dugan’s comedy You Don't Mess with the Zohan (BVSPR), starring Adam Sandler, which put $1,182,969 into its account from 290 screens. There were two more new films in the top ten. In seventh place was Vladimir Kott’s drama The Fly (Paradise), starring Alexandra Tyufta and Alexei Kravchenko, which grossed $71,234 from 55 screens, and in the next line down – Daniel Myrick’s Solstice (Pyramida), a remake of the 2003 Danish-Swedish horror film, took $61,365 from 55 screens. In addition to Sex and the City and You Don't Mess with the Zohan, the prison comedy Big Stan (Central Partnership) also passed the $1 million mark, taking up the sixth spot in the chart. Starring and directed by Rob Schneider, the film grossed $331 400 from 245 screens, for an 11-day total of $1,588,786. Including these films, the “millionaire’s club” for this year is now 85 members strong. The comic book adaptation The Incredible Hulk (UPI), starring Edward Norton, fell from second to fourth place, but has now earned more than $5 million. In its second weekend, it grossed $1,162,565 (a 64% drop) from 500 screens and $5,391,511 in 11 days. Total CIS box office from June 19–22 was $9,048,127, which is 26.5% less than the previous weekend. |
