The action-adventure film Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull (UPI) starring Harrison Ford, Cate Blanchett and Shia LaBeouf retained its leadership in terms of CIS box office. In its second weekend, the Steven Spielberg film grossed $3,642,731 from 811 screens (56% less than the first weekend), for an 11-day total of $14,045,941. This film had the best earnings per screen for the week – $4492. Holding at second place was the fantasy film The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian (BVSPR), starring Ben Barnes, showing on 500 screens and grossing $1,235,973 in its third weekend (a 59% drop) and $13,773,131 in 18 days. The Wachowski brothers' Speed Racer (Caro Premier), an actioner based on the eponymous popular late 1960s Japanimation series and starring Emile Hirsch, debuted in third place on 436 screens and put $959 760 into its account. Speed Racer was not able to race past the $1 million mark in its opening weekend, but Andrey Kudinenko's film Rozygrysh (Caroprokat) was able to earn this jackpot in its second week of release. In its second weekend, Rozygrysh won $347,812 (down 40%) off 253 screens. After 11 days of release, this film has grossed a total of $1,194 238. Consequently, this year's “millionaire’s club” now numbers 77 films. Besides Speed Racer, there were three other films in the top ten. In sixth and seventh place, there were two American horror-thriller films. Respectively, these were The Strangers (Cascade/Paradise) starring Liv Tyler and Scott Speedman (75 screens, $212,275) and Blackout (Top Film) with Amber Tamblyn (68 screens, $144,015). Both films were released in the CIS day-and-date with their world premieres. Rounding out the top ten was another film in the Russian animated series Mountain of Gems 3 (Panaroma), which earned $36,269 from 38 screens. Swedish auteur Roy Andersson’s new film You, the Living (Cinema Without Frontiers) grossed $14,509 from four screens and was in 14th place, and one line down in the list was After Him, the French drama starring Catherine Deneuve (Intercinema), which took $9362 from three screens. Thanks to the fantasy-actioner The Forbidden Kingdom coming out in Kazakhstan and its number of screens increasing from five to 21, its weekend box office rose 1693%, reaching $64,255, and it rocketed from 28th place to ninth. The film’s total gross in 39 days was $2,529,743. Total CIS Box Office from May 29 to June 1 was $7,214,623, which is 45.7% less than the figure for the previous weekend. |
