The fourth installment of the adventure series about daring archaeologist Indiana Jones, for which moviegoers around the world had to wait 19 years, has been released to CIS screens. Just like overseas, a triumph awaited Steven Spielberg’s Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull (UPI), the follow-up to Raiders of the Lost Ark (1981), Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom (1984) and Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade (1989). In its first four days, the new film, starring Harrison Ford, Cate Blanchett, Karen Allen and Shia LaBeouf grossed $8,373,010 from 811 screens and easily topped the box office chart. Its earnings per screen – $10,324 – were the best of any film that week. Last weeks leader, the fantasy film The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian (BVSPR), starring Ben Barnes, dropped to second place and grossed $3,034,542 from 735 screens in its second weekend (a 55% drop from its first). The film passed the $10 million mark, taking $11,544,606 in 11 days. The romantic comedy What Happens in Vegas… (20th Century Fox) slipped from second to third. With 263 screens, it put $639 156 (down 69%) into its piggy bank, for an 18-day total of $8,237,880. The fourth and fifth spots in the chart were taken up by new films. In fourth place was Andrei Kudinenko’s Rozygrysh (Caroprokat), starring Yevgeny Dmitryev and the popular Russian rapper Noize MC in schoolboy roles. The film is an update of the eponymous 1976 film by Vladimir Menshov. Rozygrysh took $579,872 from 253 screens. The next line down was the American “racing” film Redline (Pyramida), with Nadia Bjorlin and Nathan Philips, which grossed $158,302 from 70 screens. Besides Indiana Jones, the Owen Wilson vehicle Drillbit Taylor (UPI) finally overcame the $1 million mark after 46 days. At present, the “millionaire’s club” of the current box office year has 76 members. Total CIS box office for the last full weekend of spring (May 22-May 25) was $13,289,249, which was 25.2% more than the figure for the previous week. |
