Rob Minkoff's martial arts fantasy The Forbidden Kingdom (Top Film), which paired the two great masters Jackie Chan and Jet Li for the first time, had a successful start in CIS cinemas (the film's European premiere). In its first four days (April 24-27) the film grossed $1,268,341 from 262 screens, and its earnings per screen – $4841 – turned out to be the best of all the films of the week. Last week’s big winner, 21 (BVSPR), came down a notch, earning $1,038,098 in its second weekend (a 53% drop) from 217 screens, for a total of $4,032,675 in 11 days. The next three films were all new. In third place was the American erotic thriller Deception (Paradise), the CIS premiere of which coincided with its world premiere – it came out here a day earlier than in the U. S. Marcel Langenegger’s film is showing on 204 screens and grossed $888,351. Fourth place was taken up by the romantic comedy Forgetting Sarah Marshall (UPI) with Jason Segel and Kristen Bell, which earned $846,252 from 323 screens. The fanciful French comedy Les Deux Mondes (Luxor), starring Belgian funnyman Benoit Poelvoorde soaked $586 984 off 202 screens. Rounding out the top ten was Death Defying Acts (Pyramida), the British-Australian melodramatic thriller about Harry Houdini with Guy Pearce in the role of the famous escape artist. Directed by Gillian Armstrong, the film grossed $169,309 from 125 screens. Fred Wolf’s comedy Strange Wilderness (Central Partnership), starring Steve Zahn, Allen Covert and Jonah Hill, was in 11th place with $130 890 from 114 screens. There were two more new films in the chart. The Lark Farm (CP Classic), Paolo and Vittorio Taviani’s historical drama about the Armenian genocide was in 18th place with $31,273 from 10 screens and Michel Gondry’s whimsical comedy Be Kind Rewind, starring Jack Black, Mos Def and Mia Farrow was in 20th with six screens and $26 616. Apart from The Forbidden Kingdom, three other films made more than $1 million – Gentlemen Officers (Caroprokat), The Ruins (UPI) and Street Kings (20th Century Fox CIS). After 11 days, these three earned $1,445,316 and $1,104,960 and $1,014,667 respectively. Consequently, this year’s “Millionaire’s Club” now has 66 films. Total CIS box office from April 24 to 27 was $6,977,137, which was 8.6% less than the figure for the previous week. |
