In the ðeriod from FEBRUARY 25 to MARCH 30, 2008, Russian distributors released 41 films to CIS screens, 17 of which were in limited release of no more than 30 screens. Total box office was $74.6 million, which is 28.9% less than in February 2008 ($104.95 million) and 22.6% more than in March 2007 ($60.85 million). In March 2008, CIS citizens (not including Ukrainians) bought 11,476,923 admissions, which is 11.4% less than in March 2007 (12,946,809 admissions). The top ten companies leading in March are the following: 1. Caro Premier / Caroprokat – $21.89 million, 2. 20th Century Fox CIS – $11.79 million, 3. Central Partnership / CP Classic – $11.44 million, 4. UPI – $5.90 million, 5. Nashe Kino / Caroprokat – $5.36 million, 6. BVSPR – $5.19 million, 7. West – $4.79 million, 8. Luxor – $3.92 million, 9. Paradise – $3.02 million and 10. Pyramida – $1.99 million. In March, 24 more film made the list of films that made more than $1 million, making for a total of 54 (there were 38 such films on April 1, 2007). The top ten highest grossing films were 10,000 B.C. (Caro Premier) – $8.53 million, Kings Can Do Anything (Vsyo Mogut Korolyi) (Caroprokat) – $7.24 million, Horton Hears a Who (20th Century Fox CIS) – $7.02 million, Streetracers (Central Partnership) – $5.94 million, We Are from the Future (Mi iz buduschego) (Nashe Kino / Caroprokat) – $5.36 million (total box office – $8.13 million), Radio Day (Den’ radio) (Central Partnership) – $4.81 million, The Spiderwick Chronicles (UPI) – $3.54 million, Step Up 2 the Streets (West) – $3.14 million, Indigo (Caroprokat) – $2.61 million and The Waterhorse: Legend of the Deep (BVSPR) – $2.52 million. In March, the leader in limited release was the historical drama There Will Be Blood (BVSPR), which grossed $359,652 from 21 screens. For the first time in CIS box office history, one company (BVSPR) released three films in one weekend (February 28 – March 2): Vantage Point, The Waterhorse: Legend of the Deep and There Will Be Blood. By grossing $2.39 million, the Spanish supernatural thriller The Orphanage became the highest grossing film ever for its distributor Luxor. The crime drama The Bank Job started on a record number of screens (206) and had a record gross ($1.19 million) for its company Top Film. |
