In the ðeriod from 29 NOVEMBER 2007 to 24 FEBRUARY 2008, Russian distributors released 87 films, 26 of which were in limited release of no more than 30 prints. Total box office for the period was $201.4 million, which is 62.7% more than in the same period the year before ($123.8 million). Thirty films broke the $1 million barrier, as opposed to 27 last year. Three films made more than $10 million, the same number of such films as last year. 20th Century Fox CIS had the lion’s share of box office (36.2%) with $72.85 million. The company’s chief asset was the Russian blockbuster Irony of Fate: The Sequel, which grossed a phenomenal $49.81 million. Caro Premier / Caroprokat (24.2%), which grossed $48.69 million mostly on account of the commercial success of The Very Best Film ($27.49 million), was 12% behind 20th Century Fox CIS. The rest of the distributors were at a substantial distance from the top two. Central Partnership / CP Classic (7.5%) grossed $15.18 million with the aid of Asterix at the Olympic Games ($8.94 million). In fourth place was (6.9%) BVSPR with $14 million and its blockbuster National Treasure: Book of Secrets ($13.63 million). Next came (4.9%) Nashe Kino with $9.90 million, most of which came from its animated hit Ilya Muromets i Solovey Razboynik ($9.73 million). Paradise was in sixth place (4.8%) with $9.71 million. Its highest grosser was Rambo ($3.28 million). Seventh place (4.5%) was taken up by UPI, which grossed $9.01 million with the monster movie Cloverfield ($5.67 million). Cascade came next (3.3%) with its release of Saw 4, the fourth installment in the Saw horror series ($2.00 million). Cascade earned a total of $6.65 million. West was in ninth place (2.0%) with $4.01 million, with its film P.S. I Love You grossing $2.28 million in 11 days. Rounding out the top ten CIS distributors (1.8%) was Pyramida which earned $3.56 in the winter with the family film Mr. Magorium's Wonder Emporium ($1.69 million) as its cash cow. The remaining CIS distributors (3.9%) grossed $8.02 million together. The leader in limited release in the Winter 2007/2008 season was the whimsical adventure The Darjeeling Limited (20th Century Fox CIS). Its release on 27 screens brought its distributor $320,750. The main event of the winter season was the phenomenal success of the comedy Irony of Fate: The Sequel (20th Century Fox CIS), which grossed $49.81 million and thus became the highest-grossing film ever in CIS distribution. The parody The Very Best Film (Caroprokat) set a first-week box office record by taking an amazing $16,484,460 off 702 screens in its first four days. |
