Roland Emmerich’s adventure blockbuster 10,000 B.C., with a story about prehistoric people had a successful launch in CIS Cinemas. The film, which starred Steven Strait and Camilla Belle, grossed $3,993,751 from 536 screens and took the top spot in the box office chart. The take per screen – $7451 – was the best of all the films that week. The animated film Horton Hears a Who! debuted in second place (on the same release date as in the rest of the world) and grossed $2,947,067 off 568 screens ($5189 per screen). 10,000 B.C. and Horton Hears a Who! respectively became the 45th and 46th films to make more than $1 million in CIS distribution this year. The 47th such film was the historical The Other Boleyn Girl (UPI), which earned $1,527,039 in 11 days, placing sixth in the chart. Last week’s leader, Streetracers (Central Partnership), the roadway actioner directed by Oleg Fesenko and starring Alexei Chadov dropped to fourth place, taking $1 114 694 from 511 screens (60% less than its first weekend) for a total of $5,220,111 in 11 days. Alexander Chernyayev’s comedy-dram Vsyo Mogut Koroli (Caroprokat) lost only 36%. Its second weekend brought $1,599,825 and it went from second to third. Its total gross in 11 days was $5,603,883. Apart from the new films taking up the first two chart positions, three other films were released, but they did not make it into the top 40. In 41th place was the German-U.S.-Canadian co-production When a Man Falls in the Forest, which was the first release from Art Film, the new arthouse division of Top Film. The film, which started in the CIS simultaneously with its world premiere, stars Sharon Stone, Timothy Hutton and Dylan Baker and earned $2426 in its first weekend. In 49th place was Exiled (Cinema Without Frontiers), the actioner from Hong Kong director Johnny To and starring Anthony Wong and Simon Yam, with $1002 from one print. 51st place was taken up by Akim Salbiyev’s drama 11 Letters to God (Moskovskoye Kino) with $836 from five screens. It should be noted that the Mexican-Spanish mystical thriller The Orphanage, which grossed $2,306,644 in 18 days, became Luxor’s highest grossing film ever and the animated film Babka yozhka i drugiye, which grossed $672 042 in 25 days was Panorama’s highest grosser ever. Total CIS box office for March 13–16 was $12,145,562, which is only 0.6% than the previous weekend. |
