MOSCOW (Russian Film Business Today) — In the period from November 29, 2007 to November 30, 2008 (the entire 2008 box office year), total CIS box office was $830 million (not counting grosses in Ukraine). For the second time in the history of CIS box office, more than 100 million admissions were sold. The average ticket price in 2008 was $6.7. In 2007, it was $5.3. Accordingly, in dollar terms, the average ticket price increased 26.4%.

The 14 leading distributors grossed a total of $825.4 million (99.4% of total box office), while the rest of distributors put only a total of $4.6 million (0.6%) into their piggybanks. For the first time in CIS history, four distributors managed to gross more than $100 million, while one of them (UPI) grossed more than $200 million!
The top distributor (24.5%) in the CIS in the 2008 box office year was UPI, which grossed $203.5 million. Taking up ninth place was Top Film / Art Film (2.5%), which grossed $20.5 million. Its highest grosser was the De Niro-Pacino vehicle Righteous Kill ($3.60 million).

Pyramid was in 12th place (1.6%) with $13.5 million, which is 27.3% more than it grossed in 2007 ($10.6 million — 11th place in that year's chart). The highest grossing film in 2008 of this now defunct distributor was the animated sci-fi comedy Space Chimps ($2.55 million).
The leader in limited release in 2008 was the melodrama My Blueberry Nights (CP Classic), which grossed $532,323 from 10 screens.
The grosses of the 78 Russian films (including co-productions with other countries) totaled $211.5 million (25.5% of total CIS box office in 2008), which is 42.4% more than in 2007 ($148.5 million). Nevertheless, it should be noted that in the last 12 years (1997-2008), out of 550 Russian films distributed, 15 films with support from the major television channels made a solid profit, five made a slight profit and the remain 530 flopped in theatrical distribution! At the same time, there were 500 other films made during these years which were not distributed theatrically at all.
In 2009 Russia could very well clear the magical $1 billion hurdle!
