In the ðeriod from Seðtember 1 to Seðtember 28, 2008, Russian distributors released 28 films to CIS screens, seven of which were in limited release (no more than 30 screens). Total gross for the period was $52.7 million, which is 24.1% less than in August 2008 ($69.4 million). In September 2008, CIS citizens bought 7,865,672 admissions, which is 21.8% less than were bought in August 2008 (10,057,971). Total CIS box office as of September 28, 2008 was $638.5 million, which is 38.6% more than it was as of September 30, 2007 ($460.5 million). The top ten highest-grossing distributors in September were: 1. UPI – $11.22 million, 2. Central Partnership/CP Classic – $10.01 million, 3. Caro Premier/Caroprokat – $6.69 million, 4. Paradise – $6.57 million, 5. Top Film – $3.70 million, 6. West – $3.32 million, 7. Pyramida – $3.14 million, 8. 20th Century Fox CIS – $2.10 million, 9. Luxor – $1.34 million and 10. Cascade – $1.30 million. In September, the list of “millionaire” films gained 13 more titles, and as of September 28, 2008, it stood at 113. The highest-grossing films in September were: Hitler Kaputt! (Central Partnership) – $8.60 million, Death Race (UPI) – $6.51 million, Journey to the Center of the Earth (Caro Premier) – $6.15 million, Mamma Mia! (UPI) – $4.14 million, Bangkok Dangerous (Paradise) – $3.84 million, Babylon A. D. (West) – $3.29 million (total gross – $6.30 million), Righteous Kill (Top Film) – $2.63 million, My Best Friend’s Girl (Paradise) – $2.54 million, The Accidental Husband (Pyramida) – $1.63 million and Space Chimps (Pyramida) – $1.50 million (total gross – $2.25 million). The leader in limited release in September was Fatih Akin’s drama The Edge of Heaven (Cinema Without Frontiers), which grossed $50,882 from five screens. In September 28, 2008, the number of “millionaire” films was 113. This is an absolute record in the entire history of CIS film distribution. In 2007, there were only 109 such films for the entire box office year. |
