The film Mamma Mia! (UÐI), based on the eponymous musical using the songs of Swedish ðoð grouð ABBA, had as successful a start in CIS cinemas as in the rest of the world. The film, which stars Meryl Streep, Pierce Brosnan, Colin Firth, Amanda Seyfried and was directed by Phyllida Lloyd, the director of the Broadway production, grossed $4,139,021 from 516 screens in its first four days and easily took up the top slot in the box office chart. Its per-screen average was $8,021 – the best of any film of the week. Last week’s leader, the parodical comedy Hitler Kaputt! (Central Partnership) went down a notch, grossing $1,918,663 from 685 screens in its second weekend (63% less than in its first), for a total of $8 535 402 in 11 days. The crime thriller Righteous Kill (Top Film), its release having been widened from 287 screens to 306, shot from fifth place to third, putting $1,083,711 in its piggybank (down only 7%). Total gross for this film directed by Jon Avnet in 11 days was $2,627,065. My Best Friend’s Girl (Paradise), the romantic comedy starring Dane Cook and Kate Hudson stayed in fourth place, grossing $738,036 from 217 screens in its second weekend (a 41% drop) for an 11-day total of $2 542 102. There were new films in fifth and sixth place. Disaster Movie (West), the latest parodical comedy from Jason Friedberg and Aaron Seltzer, starring Matt Lanter and Carmen Electra, grossed $585,313 from 227 screens. The French youth comedy Skate or Die (Luxor), starring Mickey Mahut in the lead role, posted $555,685 to its account from 194 screens. Bill (Lizard), a comedy starring Aaron Eckhart and Jessica Alba, started in 18th place. In its first four days, its 38 screens brought it $15,645, for a total of $45,378 in seven days – the film was released on Monday. There were three new films in the chart. The Age of Ignorance, a comedy by master Canadian filmmaker Denys Arcand (Cinema Without Frontiers), starring Marc Labreche and Diane Kruger, was in 26th place (four screens, $6,866). Yekaterina Shagalova’s $1.2 million drama Once Upon a Time in the Provinces [Ondazhdy v provintsiyi] (Central Partnership), with Yuliya Peresild and Elvira Bolgova, was in 27th (10 screens, $6 130). Japanese director Yoji Yamada’s drama Kabei – Our Mother (Russky Reportazh) was in 38th (one screen, $1,440). Taking into account Mamma Mia!, which broke $1 million in its first weekend, the number of “millionaire” films is now up to113. Total CIS box office for the last weekend in September (September 25 — 28) was $10,941,285, which is 11.4% less than the figure for the previous week. |
